1715 Sundial from Upper Church of St. Stephen’s Parish Exhibit

The St. Stephen’s Parish Exhibit features the 1715 sundial of the Upper Church of St. Stephen’s Parish, an early King and Queen Anglican Church, also known as the Apple Tree Church. It is the earliest sundial from colonial Virginia. The base of the baptismal font of the same church is also displayed. The exhibit also tells the story of Upper Church, as well as the sundial’s donor, Col. James Taylor of King and Queen. Col. Taylor was the son of James Taylor I who came to King and Queen from England by 1675 and the great-grandfather of two Presidents, Zachary Taylor and James Madison.
