John Lewis Gravesite
Location: 565 Poropotank Road, Shacklefords, VA 23156
In 1948, historian Dr. Malcom Harris of West Point, VA uncovered an extremely overgrown 17th century cemetery on Poropotank Creek in King and Queen County, VA belonging to John Lewis. In an address to the King & Queen County Historical Society in October 2025, Dr. Augustine Warner Lewis III told the story of John Lewis and family members buried in the cemetery, including uncovering the mystery of the Lewis link to Warner Hall in Gloucester and the Lewis descendants connection to important figures in our nation’s early years. Also, Dr. Lewis stressed the significance of the cemetery’s preservation and how it was achived.
